The history of wine-growing and wine producing in Kutjevo region has started in 1232. by Cistercian monks from France. During the Ottoman Empire rule in these parts from 1526-1688 wine growing was maintained. After the coming of phylloxera at the end of 19th century, Turković family brought new sorts of grapes with American background. Mostly widespread sort is Riesling which is most famous in this region, on second place is Rhine riesling than Traminer wine and Portugeezer wine, etc. In 1947. Kutjevo winary has employed a famous and well known enologist Ivan Jambrović, who has expanded and emproved capacities of old Kutjevo cellar from 350 000 litres to 11 000 000 litres by 1984. Jambrović established a modern coopertive reletionship between wine-growers of Kutjevo region(Vallis honesta) and the other wine-growers in Pozega(Vallis aurea) region. |

Ivan Mihalj 1915-1997
From 1990., when Croatia became an independent country, privately owned small winaries in Kutjevo started their expansion. These wine entrepreneurs own about 700 ha of vinyard and 30 of them have geographycaly protected wines. In 1953. Ivan Mihalj came from Herzegovinia to Kutjevo accompanied by his family and bought vineyards on three locations:Mačevo brdo-Vidim, Zaječovac and Pod križem. Mihalj family was in cooperative relation with Kutjevo winary untill 1990. After that period we have found a wine producing family craft in 1994. |
